Anyway...I am eager for a new project:
1. NAS/bittorent box/file server
I want to make some kind of file server so that I can access all my files and documents from anywhere. Moreover I want to make this file server as my main file storage and organizer since most of my files are now left unorganized.
I googled around and found out that I can use NAS (Network Attached Storage). Unfortunately most NAS have a quite steep price tag and that is for the NAS box alone. We still need to install hard drive inside before we can start the file server thing. As I googled more I found out that we can make this file server out of a used PC. Since I do not have a used PC maybe I will make a cheap PC instead. I also have a thought of making it out of ITX form factor but sadly ITX is still considered an infant technology thus it has high price point.
This file server can also double as a bittorent box where we can do our 24/7 torrenting. On top of that I can also make an itunes server here. A great organizer IMHO! This really raises the geek spirit inside me. I am still looking out for more information regarding this though.
2. Hackintosh PC
I am thinking of having another desktop PC since the one I gave my previous one to my sister for her uni stuff (now I am using MacBook). Another desktop PC would be great but I found no challenge building one. Some more, I prefer Mac OS X as my operating system ever since I intern-ed at Apple and own a macbook. Installing a Mac OS in a PC is not an easy feat after all. There are many limitations and certain spec to run it smoothly. First we have to opt for Intel as a processor (I read somewhere we can also use AMD but it needs some patches). Then we have to choose the right component, particularyly motherboard and graphics card. Then there's some certain installation steps that we have to follow and some patches that we need to install. Looks pretty daunting but I am sure I am gonna find a great joy when I succeed building one. I might also install Windows as dual boot since there are some Windows application that is not available in Mac (particularly Engineering and modelling software). Dual boot seems to be a better idea rather than using Parallels or VMware in Mac since they are very resource-consuming.
I'll update the possible specs later!
